Since the introduction of the Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) Class 4 Hours of the Red Bull Ring in 2014, many drivers and teams have taken advantage of this affordable, competitive route into the world of endurance racing. Next fall, the FIA World Endurance Championship, or WEC, will return to the Circuit of the Americas for the 2024 Lone Star Le Mans. It will be the sixth round of the 2024 WEC season and will feature the only race located in North America.
Endurance racing is unique from other motorsport events held at COTA. Unlike conventional racing formats, where drivers attempt to cover a predetermined distance in a fast time period, endurance racing is flipped. During WEC races, drivers have a preset time to drive as long as possible. These events are designed to test the durability of both the equipment and the people behind the wheel.
The 2024 FIA WEC season will run eight rounds around the world, with race times ranging from six to 24 hours. The series’ most famous race is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the principles of the Triple Crown of motorsport, which includes the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix. Lone Star Le Mans brings that racing spirit to Austin, where drivers compete for six hours and complete the most laps during the race.

Racing at hundreds of miles per hour for six hours is a tough test for any driver to complete alone, so the WEC allows teams to split the race into “stints” with up to three drivers competing per car. A single “stage” usually lasts until the car uses a full tank of fuel, or anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. When to replace tired drivers is very consequential in a race of razor thin edges.
Another unique aspect of the endurance series is the variation in the types of cars allowed to race. Models can range from hypercars (top-tier prototype cars that represent the pinnacle of endurance motorsport) to GTE-AM cars (luxury cars modified to racetrack standards). Typically, cars are entered by well-known manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche and Cadillac with professional drivers, but others are entered independently and are built and driven by amateurs.
Despite all the variations in make and model, the field is always competitive. Drivers and manufacturers must carefully manage the balance between speed and performance, and one small miscalculation can be the difference between a celebratory podium finish and race-ending damage. The race is packed with six hours of drama and will be one you won’t want to miss.

Rooting for the underdog is fun. It’s even more fun to help beat some of the underdogs.
Mike Galley and Pat Topolinski are currently building a 363-cubic-inch small black Ford that makes 600 horsepower, 8,000 rpm, and holds together for nine hours straight. The rest of the upgrades are off-the-shelf parts available from Summit Racing, meaning most can copy the build and follow some BMWs and Porsches.
Each American Endurance Racing event consists of two nine-hour races. Amateur and professional racers share the track driving any production-based race car they desire. AER uses what’s called a performance-based class to place cars in one of five classes. Each car and driver combination completes several qualifying rounds, and then the officials analyze the slot teams in one of the five classes for each race. This means the racing field is diverse and fair, with no debate over which cars belong in each class.

Hours Of Le Mans
BMR Racing Mustang started as an abandoned drag racing project with a 302 upcam. Scott and Bill spent less than a month preparing for the endurance race.
“We had a time crunch and this was the best faux body Mustang we could find,” said Bill Burger. “We put the engine in, added better springs, sway bars, wheels and tires. Then we went racing.
The time crunch also showed. In their first race, the engine exploded less than five hours into the track.
“That engine dropped its guts all over the track,” Burger said. “After that, we installed a remanufactured 5.0L because it was reliable.”
What Are The Wec Car Classes?
The rules covering modifications were very strict, so making the Mustang competitive was a difficult task.
“We couldn’t do many upgrades other than factory parts from production cars,” said Scott McKinley. “We will make improvements and take lap penalties to make the car more reliable and competitive.”
The team switched to the AER series in 2015 to take advantage of more relaxed conversion rules. Replacing the factory 5 Mk IV roadster, the Mustang got a 5.0L, stiffer springs, larger sway bars and a three-link rear suspension.
