Motogp’s Greatest Rivalries – There’s an impressive line-up for 2023, so let’s take a look back at some of the hottest teammate rivalries in recent years.
As the saying goes in this wonderful sport: your friend is your first rival. Most of the time, you have the same gear as your gear, meaning the rider sitting on the other side of the box is competing on a level playing field.

In 2023, we got some mega lineups. World runner-up Francesco Bagnaia was joined by Enea Bastianini of the all-Italian Ducati Lenovo team; Joan Mir is riding alongside eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez for the Repsol Honda Team; Will Franco Morbidelli regain his race-winning form to challenge his Monster Energy Yamaha™ teammate Fabio Quartararo every week? And then there’s the line-up of Brad Binder and Jack Miller at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

That is to name a few. 2023 is shaping up to be an incredible season of Grand Prix motor racing, but will we see some more team rivals etch their names into the history books? Let’s take a look to see some of the team fights we have had the privilege of witnessing over the years.
In 2006, Repsol Honda welcomed three-time World Champion Dani Pedrosa to their team to share with Nicky Hayden. Pedrosa was coming off the back of three straight championship-winning campaigns and took to it like a duck. The Little Samurai claimed three podiums in his opening five races, including his first win in China.
On the other hand, the outstanding Hayden has put together a championship claim – in the 11 opening races, of late, the great American has finished on the podium only twice. It proved to be a tough partnership that year, but Pedrosa was a constant threat to his experienced rivals, including Hayden. Both collided in the infamous Estoril incident when Pedrosa took out Hayden, a crash that cost him his fellow Legend. In the end, Hayden would go on to win the championship in Valencia, while Pedrosa announced to the world that he was a force to be reckoned with in the first class – and the new hope of Honda.
The unforgettable challenge. Again, like Hayden and Pedrosa, it was a young, upcoming World Champion vs a seasoned superstar. The famous wall of the garage, in Motegi on-track scrap, both of them won the championship each as friends and more – Rossi vs Lorenzo had it all.

After two years with Rossi at Ducati, the pair reunited in 2013 when the nine-time World Champion returned to Yamaha. Things weren’t as cool between Spain and Italy as they used to be, but then 2015 rolled around. Rossi vs Lorenzo in the championship ™ The championship race for the ages. A rivalry between friends that will go down in history.
There is a theme starting to emerge here. A fresh-faced Marc Marquez enters™ as a two-time world champion and one of the most exciting talents on the Grand Prix circuit. Pedrosa was still hunting for his first premier class crown, and as he had done in 2006, Marquez was quickly winning the race.
Having gone on to famously beat teammate Pedrosa and Lorenzo for the 2013 title, upsetting both along the way, Marquez jumped to a second title in 2014. The 2016, 2017 and 2018 World Championships came in 93’s before Pedrosa retired. full-time job at the end of the 2018 campaign without wanting to be in the first division.
The partnership between Dovizioso and Iannone is an understatement for the friends’ rivalry, but it is one that should be noted. 2015 was when Ducati, under the guidance of Gigi Dall’Igna, really started to threaten podiums and wins regularly. Dovizioso was in the Ducati factory ranks in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, before Iannone was promoted from Pramac in 2015.

Two Italians from the Italian manufacturer, both fighting to be the first Ducati ™ racer since Casey Stoner. 2015 saw Iannone finish ahead of Dovizioso in the World Cup, and he was the first to take the honor of claiming Ducati’s first victory since Stoner at the 2016 Austrian GP. However, this came after Dovizioso was eliminated in the final round in Argentina. Ducati chose Dovizioso as their 2017 rider, with Iannone finally leaving the Italian marque for Suzuki.
Back in the 125cc and 250cc days, Dovizioso and Lorenzo were bitter rivals. That’s why when Lorenzo switched to Ducati in 2017, our mouths were watering. It was a big challenge for Lorenzo, who was basically coming to Dovizioso’s house to try and disrupt the payment system.
That didn’t happen in 2017 as Dovizioso dropped the title race to Marc Marquez in the final race. Could Lorenzo move quickly out of Dovizioso’s way in that final? That was a point of discussion. In 2018, Lorenzo finally found his Desmosedici groove and won three races to overtake Dovizioso in the championship race after 11 races, before the second half of the season was injured. That would have been an interesting fight if Lorenzo had been fit.
Will we see something similar in 2023? Let’s hope. We’ve got some magical line-ups across the board heading into the new season, with the grid overflowing with talent looking to stand on the podium week in, week out. Valentino Rossi vs Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez vs Dani Pedrosa are two of the biggest rivalries we’ve seen on ™. The first person you want to beat in this amazing game is your friend, in 2023, there are very interesting queues.
The first is World Champion Francesco Bagnaia welcoming Enea Bastianini into the ranks of the Ducati Lenovo Team. The two Italians have treated us to several exciting battles in 2022 with Bastianini announcing himself to the world as a true contender. Bagnaia had to come out of his skin to beat his countryman in Misano and Sepang, while it was ‘The Beast’ who managed to beat Pecco in Aragon.

Marc Marquez and Joan Mir have 10 world titles. This makes the 2023 Repsol Honda line-up one of the strongest pairings we have seen in the premier class. Fully fit, highly motivated Marquez went through four surgeries and two years of hell with only one thing on his mind: winning another championship. Honda has been victorious – by their standards – to the #93’s championship-winning campaign in 2019, making 2023 a huge year for the most successful manufacturer™.
