Understanding Drag Racing Classes And Rules – If you’re a car enthusiast, you’ve probably participated in at least one (or more) stoplight race in your lifetime. While that’s certainly frowned upon (don’t worry, we’re not here to tell you about the legalities or dangers), there are alternatives. It’s about doing it legally at your local drag strip. It’s easy to forget how much drag racing has evolved in the more than 60 years since it all started in the car-mad 50s. Early drag strips were primarily funded by fraternal societies like the Elks and Lions as a solution to rampant street racing and all the problems that often resulted. The goal was to get speed-obsessed kids off the streets and into a safer, better place where they could control their urges without posing a danger to the general public. As a result, drag racing became extremely popular. Automobile clubs now had a place to settle their opinions, and when the flag was lowered, the loudmouths were forced to shut up or remain silent. And not much has changed. For the few who have never tried drag racing or don’t know the rules involved, we’ll break down how it works in Drag Racing 101.
A drag race is a competition between two vehicles that are held on a supervised drag strip/race track and race side by side in a straight line over a distance of 1 mile (sometimes 8 miles). . In most scenarios, it doesn’t matter who wins. The one who reaches the finish line first wins. The drag racing event features a series of personal matches between his two cars called Eliminations. The winners of these races continue until the winner is one of his. The drag race is started by a Christmas tree, an electronic lighting device for each vehicle that activates a timer and stops when the same vehicle crosses the finish line. The time it takes for a vehicle to get from start to finish is known as elapsed time (or e.t.) and is what measures performance and determines handicap during competition. The NHRA-sanctioned event features his two types of drag racing: heads-up and handicap. Heads-up racing is very easy. Both cars leave the start line at the same time and the first one to cross the finish line is the winner. The goal of a handicap race is to predict how many seconds it will take your car to reach the finish line, and then try to run as close to that time as possible without going faster (also known as “breaking out”). The driver who comes closest is the winner. This style of drag racing allows cars of different speeds to race against each other. Drivers may be able to choose their own handicap. This is also known as dial-in or dial-under.

The length of a drag racing track, as you can probably guess, is a quarter mile, or 1,320 feet, and each lane is 30 feet wide. The various components of the truck are:

You will see these lights as you approach the stepped beam, or starting line. From top to bottom, here’s what each one represents. Full tree: In this configuration, three orange lights will flash continuously at intervals of 5/10ths of a second, and a green light will turn on after 1/50th of a second. The complete reaction time for a full tree is 0.000. Prestige: These yellow lights alert you as you approach the start line or stage position. Stages: I hope you’re ready to run by the time you see these because you’ll be sitting on the starting line when the stage lights go out. This occurs when the front wheels of the car break the same light beam used to activate the timing equipment. 3 Amber, aka “Pro” Start: Here all 3 Amber lights turn off at the same time before the green light goes out. The impaired driver gets a countdown of one amber light at a time before the green light turns on. The PRO system has a .4 second difference between amber light and green light. There is a difference of 0.5 seconds in handicap. Green: If you see this light, go! Green also indicates a good start. Red: If you jump the gun before the green light drops, the red light will start flashing. Basically, you don’t want to see these. If so, it probably means you’ve been disqualified unless you staged deep into the starting beam. If you are racing, only one red light will be on. This means the first offender has been removed.
One form of drag racing that you’ve probably heard of is his E.T. Bracket racing is a more obstructive version that pits two vehicles of varying performance levels against each other on a more “level” playing field. Essentially, the elapsed time of both vehicles is compared and the slower vehicle is given a head start equal to the difference between the two cars. This allows you to (hopefully) pair up any two of his vehicles for a fair match. Let’s analyze this a little. Let’s say car No. 1’s times were 10.23, 10.19, and 10.22. You may choose to dial in 10.21. Conversely, the No. 2 car allowed him to record 12.87, 12.83, 12.86, and to dial in he chose 12.85. When the Christmas tree lights up at each person’s starting signal, car 1 starts with a 2.64 second lead over his car 2. From here on it’s all a matter of reflexes. However, just because someone has an advantage in terms of elapsed time does not mean they will win. If both vehicles finish the race within the exact preset elapsed time, victory is awarded to the driver with the fastest reaction time. Local drag strips are better than ever, extending almost everywhere rubber makes contact with the road. If the vehicle is scheduled to compete in NHRA-sanctioned competition, the strip burner must pass a series of pre-race inspections with the necessary safety equipment. This also applies to “road-legal” vehicles, a class that includes “daily drivers.” These requirements become more stringent as expected horsepower and speeds increase.

NHRA allows every truck to create their own E.T. Therefore, each department may have different regulations for certain devices such as start delays and throttle stops. These benefits may also vary by region. If you would like to know about the legality of a particular device in your area/track, please contact the relevant department office for more information.
Other vehicle control devices, such as counters and time displays, are prohibited unless otherwise specified in class requirements. Strictly prohibited devices include devices that display or transmit the location of a truck or provide time or distance data. Advanced E.T. allows data recorders with the exception of regenerative tachometers. and Super Pro classes are prohibited, but not in all other classes. Computer tuning, which appears in movies such as “Fast and Furious,” is also strictly prohibited.
The NHRA stipulates that any vehicle other than a motorcycle that can travel at speeds greater than 135 miles per hour must meet minimum safety requirements for a vehicle that can run a quarter in 9.99 seconds. This means there are certain driver qualification requirements and safety clothing requirements for all competitors. If you plan to enroll in E.T., bracket bikes must adhere to the 9.99 second vehicle limit, regardless of top speed.

Basic safety matters for road legal classes are very simple. You must wear your seat belt. Headlights and taillights also need to be fully functional, not just for show. Car batteries must be properly secured. I usually use a battery box.
