The battle for second place in the MotoGP French Grand Prix was intense. In fact, it was only decided on the last lap, in favor of Marc Márquez (Gresini/Ducati).
On what is his second podium in the main race, the Spaniard started from 13th and gradually recovered… until on the last lap he did not hesitate to overtake Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati).
It was Márquez’s last attempt to secure the position and he succeeded, maintaining his lane after overtaking the Italian rival in an impressive manoeuvre.

The 2022 MotoGP season is drawing to a close and it has been an exciting year for some of the fastest two-wheeled racing in the world. This year there is a new award for fans to vote on, called the Agostini Fan Award, which will be presented on 6 November 2022 at the FIM MotoGP Awards, alongside the other usual honors and trophies.

There are four racers who have been nominated for the Agostini Fan Award and the overtakes this season are not limited to single overtakes, double overtakes are also included in the mix. Aleix Espargaró, Fabio Quartararo, Enea Bastianini and Pecco Bagnaia are all nominated for their outstanding overtakes.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month or so, you’ll have heard the criticism of MotoGP. Although the field is close, it has become more and more difficult to overtake the riders in front.
If You Could Only Watch One Motogp Race From The Past, Which Would It Be?
The Le Mans race was an example: the 27-lap race featured only a handful of overtakes, most of which were only made possible by an error by the leading rider.
Alvaro Bautista, Jonathan Rea and Toprak Razgatlioglu put on a dazzling display to pass in all three races on Saturday and Sunday, finding ways to put their bikes in front of each other in the first corner, fourth corner, Parabolica Interior and tight, awkward up hill chicane.
The sight of Rea, Razgatlioglu and Bautista knocking spots off each other reinforced that the problem is indeed down to the technological point where MotoGP is at.
With limited aerodynamics and no ride height units, the WorldSBK trio found no problem diving out of the slipstream and braking each other.
Fabio Quartararo Takes First Motogp Race Win
The reasons that are not possible have been covered in some depth, by me and by others. You can find some of the background in the Le Mans subscriber notes posted last week, and also the wider context in a column I wrote for On Track Off Road.
The short version is that MotoGP is caught in the middle of a two-pronged attack from technology. The increased use of aerodynamics on MotoGP bikes reduces wheelie and disrupts the air behind them.
Less wheelie means more stress on the front tire, which increases the temperature. Less air on the tire in the slipstream means that the tire temperature rises further.
And the bike’s increasing reliance on aero to keep the front wheel on the ground means the bikes lose it in the slipstream and can’t brake as hard as the bike in front.
Overtaking Is Becoming Harder But F1 Rules
Then there are units at driving height. The rear unit lowers the center of mass and reduces wheelie, which in turn puts more stress on the front tire.
But these devices also change the way riders brake in turns: with a lower center of mass, the bike leans differently, allowing riders to brake much harder and putting even more stress on the front tire.
Stress equals temperature and Boyle’s Law states that temperature equals pressure and raising the pressure on the front tire completely changes the behavior of the bike.
Aleix Espargaro provided an example at Le Mans, referring back to sitting behind Jack Miller and Marc Marquez for most of the race. When he finally got past – again, only thanks to a mistake by Marquez and Miller – he got cool air on his front tire again,
