In one of Colorado’s famous “fourteeners” (mountains that kiss the sky above 14,000 feet of thin air), the Mount Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in North America. A distance greater than the rarefaction of the air between the rows can be more difficult to overcome.

Mount Revelstoke is perhaps Canada’s premier climb. The scene begins in a dense forest but opens up to a clear mountain view, making the tight rods worth it. The annual Revelstoke Steamer Hill Climb is a good excuse to try it — typically in early September.

Thousands of cyclists make this great climbing excursion, which is a welcome addition to training camps every year. The average grade is just 4.1 percent, but it’s very steep as you reach the summit. The scenery, which includes thousands of iconic saguaro cacti and spectacular rock formations, is second to none.

This remote climb has a reputation as the most difficult in the state of California. Located in one of the highest valleys in the US and surrounded by 14,000-foot snow peaks, it is also one of the largest climbs in the world.

Southern Rock Racing Series At Blue Holler

This gem of a high mountain in the Adirondacks is as long and tough as Alpe d’Huez, and while the lush and fragrant sections of the forest are heavily packed, they are just as scenic.

At nearly six hundred feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The summit sits at the end of the Dead Mountain Mitchell State Park, the highest legal paved road in the Eastern United States. It’s in the leg-breaking light of the annual 102.7-mile Attack on Matthew Mitchell event.

Among the most difficult slopes in our State, if not the world, to climb, Mount Washington has an average grade of 12 percent with stretches of 18 percent. The last 50 antennas snake up 22 percent on their way to the hot center at the top, where high winds are common.

This volcanic monster is named mammoth as it is the hardest climb on the planet. As if the steep elevation wasn’t hard enough, the surface turns to powdery limestone about five miles from the top, making that last stretch very slow going. One route to the top is about four times the Alps d’Huez.

One Wickedly Fast Hillclimb Toyota Mr2 Aw11

This is the highest mountain in the Italian Alps one of the climbs in the Giro d’Italia. Originally created for farmers, it is very narrow and includes a penalty of 18 percent.

This monstrous climb is one of the iconic features of the Tour de France, and is a feature in many races. To reach the top becomes a particularly steep challenge at the top of the exposure, where the riders have no protection from the frequent strong winds and the beating of the sun.

This Haemus averages roughly 12 percent and ramps up to 20 percent as you work your way up to a sharp stone fin more than 8,000 feet in the air.

This steep climb has made many appearances in the Giro d’Italia and punishes the riders with a whopping 48 bends. These three miles are at the height of the lungs, all the more strongly to reach the summit sitting above 9,000 feet.

Race To The Clouds

This legendary Giro d’Italia climb is one of the highest paved roads in the Alps. Not only is it brutally steep, averaging about 8 percent and rarely dipping below 7 percent, but it’s also often cold (and snowing) when runners hit the slopes in May.

Colombia is known for its climbers, which is not surprising when you consider the area’s endless lines of climbs like the Alto de Letras, which breaks through the clouds at a height of more than 1,200,000 feet and is considered one of the longest climbs in the world.

With an average gradient of just over 10 percent and a maximum pitch of nearly 24 percent, the Alto de l’Angliru is arguably the toughest climb in Spain. He has made several appearances at the Vuelta a Espana and is so fierce (especially on the descent) that British rider David Millar tore off his number at the top of the 2002 race to protest his inclusion in the race.

Pro Tour riders have tackled this Alpine climb countless times over the years. This one starts with a 10 percent kick and averages 5.5 percent, saving harder stretches near the top.

Motorsport’s Seven Most Challenging Corners (list)

This climb, which is the toughest climb in Southern California, is one of the most feared on the California Trail. One rider after another dies as the road ramps up to 10 to 14 percent for extended stretches on the way to the final summit at Mount Baldy Ski Area.

Part of the annual “Cycle of the Sun” ride, this roller coaster ride that starts on Maui Pa’ia’s north shore is considered one of the longest, most difficult in the world. Although the average slope at 5 percent is not too steep, it is very steep. And the hardest part is the last kick to the top, when the work is over and you have the least oxygen.

This beast of the Pyrenees made its first appearance at the Tour de France in 1910 and is now among the most visited climbs in the history of the Tour. The gorges are the highest road in the Mid-Pyrenees.

Alto de la Linea is located in the middle latitude of the Andes mountains and is considered a serious challenge by the Colombian riders, since this mountain is higher than you.
