Maybe you’ve seen a friend share pictures of a race they did on social media and thought “I really want to do that!”
Maybe, your spouse, like me, hounded you for more than 8 years, so finally you caved and you are ready to play adventure match.
There is no doubt that this game can be very useful. As you prepare for your first event, you may be wondering what kind of adventure you and/or your team will need.
In this post, I’ll provide a list of adventure racing brands specifically for beginners, as well as share our team’s thoughts on what you should buy, what you can Rent or rent for your first match, and you will probably be playing football. around the house already.
Trail Running Gear List 2024
Adventure racing is a serious sport, and this gear can be very expensive. More than when we are talking about long-distance running races, like the Eco-Challenge, which covers several days and half a dozen or more disciplines. But even in the shortest, competitive entry, you are more than likely to encounter some kind of paddling, mountain biking, trekking, and orienteering.
It is dangerous to buy some of these products before your first competition, especially if you are not sure if you will continue with the sport. No one wants a $1,000 tandem kayak collecting dust in their garage when it turns out, you can’t keep up with your spouse when you both try to paddle the same boat.
For this post, I will assume that you start with a shorter event, from 3-6 hours. Although some of these lessons may take longer, 10-12 hour events, too.
This list of adventure races covers the basics required for most entry-level adventure races. However, be sure to check the required list from the race director of your particular race, to make sure you can find the starting line with everything you need!
How To Build Your First Trail Running Kit
If you’re already an endurance athlete or an adventurous spirit, chances are you’ve got plenty of these already. However, we will cover all the basics.
Let’s start with the adventure racing products that you will need to buy, if you don’t already have them.
From running back, it’s no surprise that this is one of my recommendations for gear that you should have in your adventure racing arsenal. Uncomfortable feet will ruin your race faster than you can say “check point”. So, make sure you have shoes that:
For an adventure race, you’ll want to dress similarly to what you would wear for a running or cycling race. Some things to keep in mind when deciding on clothes:

As for what to wear, it will be completely different based on where you live, and the time of year you race. That said, here are some general guidelines:
You will need some kind of pack to carry all your essentials and water. Although it may be tempting to grab that old ruck that you put on the ceiling, you’ll want to really think about how the ball you’re using will fit you when in competitive mode.
Much like shoes, different athletes have different preferences in terms of their favorite packages. And of course, different packages will accommodate different bodies and different bodies.
For what it’s worth, I love my Nathan VaporHowe 12L for long distance adventures, and my UltraAspire Epic XT 2.0 for adventures longer than 10 hours. Geoff is a big fan of the OutThere AS-3 package.
Best Racing Gear For Marathons: Beginners Guide To Running Gear
For entry to the adventure race, you won’t need a big package. A water pack or daypack, something big enough to carry your water, food, and other essentials on your person, will suffice.
Do you see the difference here? There are a handful of adventure racing gear that you’ll want to fit properly. Not just for comfort, but in this case, safety.
“But wait! I have a football helmet in my garage!” you might say. Before you check this item off your list, ask yourself what kind of helmet holds up. According to Consumer Reports, bicycle helmets should be replaced every five years. This is because the information in the helmet breaks down over time (and especially in the heat, like being stored in an air-conditioned garage or or). The explosion of the materials can reduce the effective protection of the helmet.
(The helmet must be replaced after an accident, or if it has a major impact, even if it looks “good” OK.)
Enduro Mountain Biking Gear: The Essential Kit List
While you can borrow them, a similar pair of gloves is cheap enough that I put them on the “to buy” list.
In adventure racing, you may find that you have to keep your gloves on during the entire race. Not only do they serve their purpose of cycling, but they can help protect your hands from friction and blisters during the paddle, and prevent cuts from thorns, bumps mills, falls etc. during bushwacking.
And if we are honest, they will get sweaty and funky. The best way to have your partner is not to give back to a friend.
I want to put this on the “open” list, because technically, you can borrow this item, especially if you’re not sure if you’re going to repeat the adventure. more difficult.
Essential Gear For Your First Ultramarathon
Also, if your adventure race requires plotting points using UTM coordinates, you’ll also want to know how to do that before the race.
Both of these items are small and inexpensive, and won’t take up much room in your closet!
Here in the Hart house, we’re big fans of Silva products. You can start with something like their starter #1-2-3 Compass. Personally, we’re fans of the Explorer Pro model for a number of reasons, including – but not limited to – the windshield for my aging husband.
Although strange to think of as an adventure, food is worth mentioning here. Unlike traditional running races, you’re not usually going to find “residences” in the menu during an adventure race (although sometimes it happens!)
Of The Best Hydration Packs For Running And Cycling
Participants are generally responsible for providing their own food and water (yes, including water) during the race. So unless the race director says otherwise, prepare for this, when explaining what items you need on race day!
As mentioned before, adventure racing can be a gear heavy – and therefore expensive (at least up front) – sport. If you already have some of these items, great! But if you don’t, please don’t worry – chances are you can borrow from a friend or rent them from a hardware store.
The type of boat needed for adventure racing can vary
