Every year, the Andler-Schönberg Hill Climb in Belgium offers a spectacular challenge for both riders and thousands of spectators. This is also known as the “Impossible Hill Climb”, basically because it is almost impossible to get up without falling backwards.

The rules are deceptively simple. Fastest time doesn’t matter here. Most important is the rider’s ability to get their car from start to finish. It fails – most riders do – the winner is whoever rides the bike up the highest mountain.

In this video from the 2022 event, you can see some of the riders and their modified dirt bikes. It’s steep, and it’s steep, and even with the benefit of good speed behind it, almost everyone who tries to climb this hill is turned back.
This is definitive proof that there are a million ways to fall. There are relatively simple falls where the bike falls and the rider falls behind it. The bike ended up completely over the edge, seemingly hovering in mid-air until it caught air of gravity and began its inevitable descent.
Most people do, but there’s one little kid who can’t even get off the launch pad with the help of an adult (dad? uncle? older cousin?). Maybe next year, baby.
Invincible. In the end, we finally see one rider successfully scale the hill. It’s honestly a relief after seeing the bikes and riders fall so forcefully against the laws of physics.

It’s a lot of fun, though, and this climbing event is highly rated among European mountain climbing enthusiasts. To close out the festivities, we’re getting a big, smoky exhaust you can almost smell through your computer screen. All’s well that ends well – until next year. When I first set foot on Pikes Peak in 2011, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the official photographer of the historic climb.
The conversation came up with Mitch Snow, the company’s director of promotions and heritage, when Ken Block was fired.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a non-profit organization, and seeing as the race is over 100 years old, they are focused on preserving its history as well as documenting each hill climb for generations to come. Being an official photographer is an important job.
I didn’t know what to say at first; with such a name came a lot of responsibility. But somehow, I’ve been documenting the race since 2011.

I shoot everything I see because I always try to tell a story through my pictures. My story wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t shoot them all.
When covering Pikes Peak, I’m usually on the ground for seven days. Two days for travel, three for practice, rest until race day, and of course the main race.
This time I was on the ground for nine days, one day to shoot the motorcycle and another day to do the technical inspection.
It was hard to say those words; there was a 2:30 a.m. wakeup every day and a 1:30 a.m. wakeup on race day.

I shot above the clouds for the first time. According to some veterans, this show happens once every 10 years.

Peter Cunningham is always a jokester, and it was great to see such an experienced racer at Pikes Peak.
Clouds rolled in on the final practice day, cutting it short and climbing mid-mountain, starting at around 12,000 pounds.
Motorcyclists make this amazing reconstruction at the same time as all other riders. They also go at a very good pace.

Blue hour release. The slopes are fun to shoot at this time, and lucky for me, it wasn’t too cold at the top with temperatures hovering around 32℉ (0℉). I think it got down to 10℉ (-12℃) in the same place the first year I went.
Paul Gerard was an Enviate Hypercar pilot, but I first met him at the BMW Performance Driving School where he was one of the instructors.
Get out. Car guys usually go back down the hill after speed practice, but motorcycle guys make the most of it.

Even though they have shot the same race for the same year, there are new areas to explore. I never realized this angle was there until I was about a quarter mile down the road, but with my 13,500 lbs working on it, the picture is not double.

Even though I only had one year to shoot dirt before the whole mountain was paved, I can say I’m definitely going to miss it. The sight of a giant dust chicken never gets old.

I don’t know whose bright idea it was to bring a 69-mile Camaro to Pikes Peak, but I love it.
I have to give it to motorcyclists – serious cornerers should ride these corners a tenth out of 10. Especially those without bodyguards.
