Before the 1.58.0 update, you could unlock all vehicles throughout the trophy path. Since the 1.55.3 update, the cup progression system has been updated. The new rankings based on cup placement are as follows:
Progression between rank types (ie between Bronze III and Silver I, 9,000 to 10,000) must be achieved by winning a boss battle. Boss battles are one-on-one races against powerful AI-controlled opponents based on your personal best times, known as Mackie, Champ, Bling, Frank, and Nikita, and placed specifically in that order.
